The Boroughs is an eight-part series created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), who will serve as co-showrunners and exec producers.

Set in a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, the show follows a group of unlikely heroes who must band together to prevent an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.

The Duffer brothers are executive producing the project through their production banner, Upside Down Pictures, which launched officially last summer. Also exec producing for Upside Down Pictures is former BBC America and MRC exec Hilary Leavitt, who handles day-to-day running of the company.

In addition to Stranger Things and The Boroughs, the Duffer brothers are also producing several Stranger Things spin-off projects including a live-action series, an animated series and a stage play.

Upside Down Pictures’ development slate also includes Death Note, a live-action TV adaptation of the Japanese anime and manga series, and a TV adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman, produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television.

“We’ve been fans of Jeff and Will’s writing for a long time and when they pitched us their idea for The Boroughs we immediately knew they had something very special on their hands,” said the brothers.

“While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching.”
