Tragic death of UK teen Molly Russell to be investigated in new C4 documentary film

Snowstorm Productions and Storyboard Studio’s Molly vs The Machines

UK public service broadcaster Channel 4 (C4) has greenlit online safety-themed factual project Molly vs The Machines.

Produced by London-based non-fiction prodco Snowstorm Productions and Storyboard Studios, the one-off documentary is directed by Marc Silver (Who is Dayani Cristal?).

It details the tragic death of Molly Russell, the UK teenager who died from an act of self-harm in 2017 following depression and the results of social media consumption.

The film examines how Molly’s life and death were intertwined with algorithms generated by big tech companies in Silicon Valley. Molly’s father Ian has since teamed up with charities, experts and other bereaved parents to campaign for improved online safety regulations.

Made in close collaboration with Molly’s family and friends, the documentary arrives at a time of heightened public and political discourse about the issue. Earlier this month, UK media regulator Ofcom launched an investigation into Elon Musk’s X (fka: Twitter) over sexualised imagery generated by the Grok AI chatbot.

Molly vs The Machines was funded with support from C4, Luminate, Screen Scotland, Empathy AI, Placeholder Films, The Filmmaker Fund, Doc Society and Ford Foundation JustFilms. It will premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival on March 1 and is set for a limited theatrical release for one night only on the same date.
