C21Media Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility Statement

C21Media is the market-leading B2B publisher and digital content provider for the international television and content industry. We combine a portfolio of publishing brands with an events business and powerful online screenings marketplace.

C21 aims to be part of the solution. We recognise and reward creativity, hard work, positivity, teamwork, learning and innovation, while celebrating individuality within a progressive environment. Our brands inform, inspire and entertain the global content business and the C21 team who deliver that experience. We aspire to lead the global conversation regarding the future of the content industry.

We acknowledge that the creation and the consumption of our products has consequences on the environment and communities. We are looking at behaviours and technologies we can adopt and invest in to reduce our negative impact and lead by example.

We are committed to continuously improving our sustainability and environmental practices with the aim of reducing our overall carbon footprint. We are doing this in the following ways:

Energy

In our office, our electricity is supplied by Good Energy, a certified B Corporation providing 100% renewable energy.

We aim to improve our energy efficiency wherever possible. We turn off electronic equipment when not in use, use fan systems instead of air conditioning, and use LED lighting throughout.

Travel and transport

We operate a hybrid working week and a ‘no car’ policy for days when  staff travel to the office.

We encourage the use of sustainable modes of transport, including  public transport, walking and cycling. We offer our employees the opportunity to invest in cycling to work at a reduced cost through the UK Government’s Cycle to Work scheme.

For international business travel, we encourage the use of rail wherever possible and are actively looking at effective ways to reduce the impact of our air travel.

Sustainable sourcing

Where possible, we work with environmentally conscious and sustainable suppliers who comply with a sustainability policy. We favour suppliers which follow a sustainability policy or who are in the process of implementing one.

We use a number of international printers for our print publications in order to produce publications local to event destinations and reduce our carbon footprint. We work with all printers to ensure paper is sourced sustainably and in accordance with FSC or PEFC environmental standards. Non-toxic vegetable oil-based inks are used.

We select event venues that are committed to making a positive and sustainable impact, working with the venues to ensure a positive approach to environmental responsibility. We work with suppliers who use eco-friendly lanyards made from old plastic bottles and eco-friendly delegate bags with REACH compliant inks and dyes.

Waste and recycling

We work with our suppliers to ensure safe disposal of assets with priority given to recycling and energy recovery using zero landfill policies.

UV&S is our preferred supplier for shipment, storage and large scale event builds. UV&S places the highest priority on environmental responsibility and launched their own initiative in 2014 following the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle with a zero-landfill policy.

For our events, our delegate badges are made from paper where possible. If they are not paper-based, they are biodegradable. Any remaining badges post-event are returned to a certified recycling centre, where they are chipped and repurposed into products such as buckets, trays, and bottles.

We minimise the use of paper and laser printing in daily operations, reusing and recycling materials wherever possible. We are currently converting all office paper to 100% recycled paper under an environmentally preferable purchasing policy, and our offices are now 80% paper-free.

We recycle waste through Hackney Council, and also partner with Recorra, a specialist recycling company, to further support responsible waste management. Old electronic equipment is recycled through Square Box Recycling, an Environment Agency–approved and WEEE-compliant supplier that ensures 0% of waste goes to landfill.

Our corporate social responsibility commitments and objectives can be defined as follows:

Social impact

We work with Rightsteps Wellbeing to provide our team with world-leading health and wellness support.

We prioritise the well-being and safety of our employees through training programmes delivered by Mast People Support. These initiatives ensure that team members are protected whilst also empowering managers with the skills and knowledge to handle challenging situations with confidence and care.

We also support new talent entering the industry through a range of initiatives. The David Lyle Foundation provides two annual scholarships, each worth US$10,000, to help young executives build meaningful careers in the international television business by supporting creativity, opportunity, and professional development.

The Drama Series Script Competition provides a platform for aspiring writers to submit pilot episode scripts for competition, to have the opportunity to present their script to key commissioners in the global drama business. Finalists receive a consultation session while the winner receives a US$10,000 option to be developed for series.
