StarzPlay begins production on first German original Night in Paradise

The Night in Paradise cast

StarzPlay will launch its first German-language original, Night in Paradise, across its complete European and Latin American footprint.

The streamer has begun principal photography in Berlin on the six-part series, which is being filmed from now until October in the German capital, plus Brussels and other parts of Belgium.

Night in Paradise is based on Frank Schmolke’s graphic novel and is produced by ITV Studios-owned Windlight Pictures in coproduction with Heinrich Ambrosch’s company Satel Film. Windlight Pictures was founded last year by Das Boot executive producer Moritz Polter.

Distributed by ITV Studios, the show’s cast includes Jürgen Vogel, Lea Drinda, Birgit Minichmayr and Leonard Scheicher. It is written by Matthias Glasner (Das Boot) and Hannah Schopf (Tiger Girl), with Glasner also directing the majority of the series alongside Bettina Oberli (My Wonderful Wanda).

Described as a dark and edgy drama, it follows a taxi driver and his estranged 18-year-old daughter who collide while drifting through the city, reopening old wounds as capitalism crumbles around them.

The series is being supported by the German Motion Picture Fund, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Belgian Tax Shelter Regime and Wallimage. Belga Productions is handling physical production in Belgium.

Night in Paradise joins other non-English-language StarzPlay shows such as French series All Those Things We Never Said, Spanish original productions Express and Nacho, and Latin American titles MalaYerba, Señorita 89, Toda La Sangre and El Refugio. StarzPlay has also teamed up with Fremantle- and Bron-backed prodco The Immigrant on Spanish-language dramedy series Yellow.

StarzPlay is currently available in Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, parts of Europe, India, Indonesia, Japan, parts of Latin America, Malaysia, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
