David Mitchell’s Ludwig lands third season on BBC ahead of S2 debut

Ludwig is written by creator Mark Brotherhood

Ludwig, the BBC’s biggest scripted series since 2024 and a copro with ZDF in Germany, has been commissioned for a third run on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

The series is produced by ITV Studios-owned Big Talk Studios in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company and is a coproduction with ZDF in Germany.

Season two is set to air later this year. It is produced in association with ITV Studios, which also handles international distribution.

Season one was the biggest launch for a comedy on the BBC since at least 2018, attracting 9.5 million viewers in 28 days.

Starring David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, the detective series is written by Mark Brotherhood, who also created the show.

The new 6×60′ season was commissioned by Jon Petrie, outgoing BBC director of comedy commissioning, prior to Petrie confirming his departure to join Hat Trick Productions  as creative director.

The lead director is Chris Foggin. The executive producers are Kenton Allen and Toby Welch for Big Talk Studios, Brotherhood, Mitchell, Kathryn O’Connor and Chris Sussman. Claus Wunn and Frank Seyberth executive produce for ZDF. The series producer is Anthony Wilcox, with Anya Wilson serving as producer. The commissioning editor for the BBC is Seb Barwell.
