BBC2 fills up with Comedy Unit’s Empty

With the post-Queengate commission freeze now lifted for its subsidiaries, BBC2 has commissioned a new sitcom called Empty from indie RDF Media Group’s recently acquired Scottish production company The Comedy Unit.

The six-part sitcom will air in the first quarter of this year, starring Gregor Fisher (Love Actually) and Billy Boyd (Lord of the Rings) as Glaswegian removal chums Jacky and Tony. The series sets out to find “comic possibilities in the most mundane of situations.”

Empty comes from the writers of Rose D’Or-nominated sitcom Legit, Robert Florence and Iain Connell.

The Comedy Unit’s other credits for networks and multi-channel include Rab C Nesbitt (BBC2), Still Game (BBC2) and Rose D’Or-nominated sitcom Legit (BBC Scotland).

The series is directed by Colin Gilbert and produced by Iain Davidson. Executive producer for The Comedy Unit is Rab Christie. It was commissioned by Roly Keating, controller BBC2, and Cheryl Taylor, executive editor comedy.
