BBC to drop DIY SOS in 2027 and commissions spin-off

DIY SOS was first broadcast in 1999

The BBC is to “rest” long-running home renovation series DIY SOS in 2027 and replace it with a cheaper spin-off that revisits past projects.

The new show, DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life, has been commissioned from South Shore Productions, which has made DIY SOS since last year. It will revisit successes from the original series and is intended to extend the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way.

“In light of the BBC’s savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore,” a BBC spokesperson said. “DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year.”

DIY SOS, which is presented by Nick Knowles, sees a team transform the homes of families facing severe illness, disability, bereavement or building disasters. Initially produced by BBC Bristol and BBC Studios, it was first broadcast in 1999 and is currently airing its 35th series on BBC One and iPlayer.

The decision to axe the show comes as the BBC pursues a drive to save £500m over three years, a drive that includes the loss of 2000 jobs. The broadcaster has already cancelled shows including Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind and Live At The Apollo.
