Scandi nets fish out Whitstable Pearl

Whitstable Pearl was ordered by Acorn TV

Four Scandinavian broadcasters have pre-bought crime series Whitstable Pearl (6×60’), which was launched at the London Screenings earlier this month.

SVT in Sweden, NRK in Norway, YLE in Finland and TV2 in Denmark have all acquired the series, which was produced by the UK’s Buccaneer Media for Acorn TV, the AMC SVoD service that showcases UK content in the US.

The series, which is being shopped by London-based Cineflix Rights, is set in the English seaside town of Whitstable and stars Kerry Godliman (After Life, Derek) as a woman who solves crimes while also running a local restaurant.

Based on the Whitstable Pearl Mysteries series of books by Julie Wassmer, the show was created and directed by Norway’s Øystein Karlsen.

Buccaneer Media is continuing its strategy of adapting thriller novels, having recently announced a new series based on CJ Tudor’s books The Burning Girls. It is best known for ITV crime drama Marcella, which was also distributed by Cineflix.

Buccaneer was set up in 2013 as a joint venture between Cineflix and Tony Wood, formerly of reality prodco Lime Pictures.
