Mubi adds to series line-up with acquisition of Spanish drama La Mesías

Art house cinema streamer Mubi has acquired the exclusive streaming rights to Movistar Plus original series La Mesías in Australia and parts of North America and Europe.

La Mesías will stream exclusively on Mubi in the UK, Canada, Turkey, the Netherlands, Germany and Australia from September 3. It will also be available non-exclusively on Mubi in France.

The deal was closed by Movistar Plus International, which handles the international distribution of the show.

The seven-part series is a collaboration with Suma Content from Spanish creative duo Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, known as Los Javis, who won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May for their feature film La Bola Negra (The Black Ball).

Starring Lola Dueñas alongside Macarena García, Carmen Machi and Cecilia Roth, it follows a man whose childhood trauma resurfaces when a Christian pop girl group goes viral.

The acquisition comes as predominantly film-focussed streamer Mubi has steadily been adding to its library of series in recent years, having added the entirety of the Twin Peaks catalogue and M: Son of the Century last year.

Earlier this year, Mubi released Wong Kar Wai’s epic 30-part drama series Blossoms Shanghai in Latin America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Turkey and India.

Meanwhile, the streamer has begun fully financing its first slate of feature films with titles such as Mastermind (Kelly Reichardt), Teenage Sex & Death in Camp Miasma (Jane Schoenbrun) and Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland.

This originals push is also extending into series, beginning with an as-yet-unannounced project out of Japan, Mubi founder and CEO Efe Cakarel said last year.
