Icelandic crime thriller Black Sands heads to Disney+, Viaplay, Alibi

Aldís Amah Hamilton as Anita in Black Sands

Disney+ has picked up Icelandic crime drama Black Sands in the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The US-based SVoD service acquired the show from UK distributor All3Media, which has also licensed the eight-part series to Viaplay ahead of the Scandinavian streamer’s launch in the US.

Other buyers include crime channel Alibi in the UK, Australia’s SBS, Japan’s AXN Mystery channel, Canal+ in Poland, Chinese streamer Pumpkin Film and Upstream Media in the Philippines.

Produced by indie Glassriver, a second series has been ordered by commissioning broadcaster Channel 2 in Iceland.

Black Sands centres on troubled young police detective Anita, played by Aldis Amah Hamilton (The Valhalla Murders), who is forced to confront her past as she investigates a series of mysterious deaths in her home town.
