BBC Children’s has ordered a microdrama spin-off from Canadian live-action drama series The Next Step as part of its first slate of YouTube‑first commissions.

The Next Step, which first aired on CBBC in 2013 and has since spawned 10 seasons, follows a group of dancers at a dance studio. The microdrama version will launch on YouTube in February and will also be available on iPlayer.

The commission, along with other YouTube-firsts BBC Children’s intends to make, come as the pubcaster launches a suite of new channels on the Google-owned platform.

The BBC previously announced plans to launch 50 new YouTube channels in 2026, including seven kids’ channels.

Two of these – Epic Facts and Non-Stop Chaos – launched in December. Epic Facts is a factual entertainment channel, while Non-Stop Chaos showcases comedy and practical jokes from CBBC shows.

Later this year, a revamped CBeebies Parenting channel will launch on YouTube, offering practical advice and resources to support families.

These channels join existing YouTube channels for CBeebies, CBBC, Non-Stop Cartoons, Blue Peter, Newsround and BBC Bitesize GCSE.

BBC Children’s said the new themed channels will be focused on “distinctive, digital first programming including microdramas, creator led comedy, educational formats and inspiring factual stories.”

Patricia Hidalgo, director of BBC Children’s & Education, said: “We are constantly evolving the service we provide to children, parents and teachers to ensure the BBC remains a key player for young audiences in the UK and beyond. Our mission is to provide trusted, inclusive and accessible, homegrown public service content that helps children learn, stay informed and be entertained, wherever they are.

“By commissioning digital first formats, developing more school ready content and bringing communities together, all while supporting UK creativity, we want to reach more children and families than ever before.”
