WB Network orders Top of the Pops pilot

The BBC’s long-running music franchise Top of the Pops might be heading for the US airwaves, after the WB Network commissioned an hour-long pilot of a US version of the format.

The stateside version of the live music show is being co-produced by the BBC alongside US production outfit Andrew Solt Productions. The format features a showcase of the week’s best-selling music acts, ending with a performance of the chart-topper, as decided by Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart.

The TOTP format has so far been re-versioned in various territories like Germany, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, France, Thailand and India. Each features local acts plus footage of international artists, which is shared by the various local versions.

The popularity of the Germany version on RTL has lead to a 51:49 joint-venture between the show’s producer Me Myself & Eye and BBC Worldwide, called Me Myself & Someone Else, to exploit the TOTP franchise across all media. The original show began on BBC1 in 1964.
