Star+ boards Filmax, Gloriamundi series

Susana Abaitua (left) and Sandy Hernández will star in the drama

Spanish distributor Filmax and prodco Gloriamundi Producciones have unveiled the first project from the production partnership they entered in January, with Disney-owned streaming channel Star+ picking up the show.

Drama series The Roar of the Butterflies is a fictional retelling of the story of the Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic, who resisted the Trujillo dictatorship and were assassinated in 1960.

The 13×50’ series has been created by Juan Pablo Buscarini (Chinese Take-Out) and has already been acquired by Star+ in Latin America. The cast includes Susana Abaitua (Patria, Crazy For Her), Sandy Hernández (On the Block), Guillermo Toledo (I’m So Excited!) and Luis Alberto Garcia (Che), and filming begins in July.

Madrid’s Tandem Films is producing the series along with Gloriamundi and Argentinian prodco Mediabyte. Buscarini will showrun alongside Gloriamundi founder Pablo Bossi (Monzón, Nine Queens, The Hairy Tooth Fairy).

Buscarini said: “The Roar of the Butterflies is an extremely important story, filled with emotions, solidarity and the fight for injustice, that we hope will help to denounce and eradicate the violence suffered by women the world over.”

Ivan Diaz, head of international at Filmax, added: “It’s great to see how our alliance with Gloriamundi is already reaping its rewards. The series’ combination of friendship, personal struggle, sensuality and elements of political thriller make this a highly promising project.”
