Culture CAP7, the Spanish investment fund specialising in the audiovisual sector, has acquired Spanish production and distribution company Onza Entertainment.

Founded in 2013 by José María Irisarri, Nicolás Bergareche and Gonzalo Sagardía, Onza has established itself as one of the most active prodcos in Spain and Latin America, with recent productions including Atasco (Prime Video), Sin gluten (RTVE) and Isla Brava (ViX).

It also has subsidiaries such as Onza Distribution, Onza Euskadi and Onza Americas.

Sagardía, CEO of Onza, said: “We are very excited about this new stage in which Culture CAP7 Fund has chosen Onza as the base for building an ambitious project of growth and value creation in the Spanish-speaking audiovisual market.”

Culture CAP7 Fund said the acquisition of Onza Entertainment and the incorporation of its management team would make the fund “the ideal financial partner for those companies that want to lead the transformation of the audiovisual sector in our country.”

“This is a unique project that combines capital, talent and strategic vision, to give the boost that the Spanish audiovisual sector needs to grow and compete in a global market,” the fund said in a statement.

The Culture CAP7 Fund is managed by Blackpearl Capital Management. The fund is backed by the State Society for Technological Transformation and various professional and institutional investors, and has a target size of €60m (US$70.32m).

“This operation is key to the fund’s strategy, which aims to incorporate diverse creative talent into an ecosystem in which Onza is responsible for the financial structuring and material execution of projects conceived and developed by independent creators,” the fund said.

The statement added that the fund will continue to deploy its strategy with investments aimed at companies that operate across the entire value chain of the audiovisual sector, including production, distribution, post-production, services and technology.
