Pure Flix Familia, Great American Media’s newly launched streaming service for Latino audiences, has launched a dedicated microdrama channel called Novelitas.

The channel is aimed at bringing faith- and family-centred storytelling to the growing microdrama industry.

It has launched with three titles produced by Latino production company Minivela: Spanish-language Christmas romantic comedy Alquilé Un Novio Para Navidad, alongside Cholita Takes LA and Sabrina.

Earlier this year Great American Media struck a production partnership with Minivela.

Produced in Ecuador in partnership with Red Minds Films, Alquilé Un Novio Para Navidad blends romance, Christmas traditions and themes of faith in a vertical format designed for mobile viewing.

Cholita Takes LA follows a fearless Bolivian fashionista and lucha libre queen who travels to LA to reconnect with her ailing Mexican-American grandmother.

Created by Manny Ruiz and produced by Minivela in partnership with Chicano Hollywood, it is described as a colourful, bilingual story celebrating cultural identity, family and belonging.

Sabrina, meanwhile, follows a teenage girl who resists her family’s plans for an elaborate quinceañera, a traditional Latin American coming-of-age celebration for a girl’s 15th birthday.

Texas-headquartered Great American Media launched Pure Flix Familia last month priced at US$4.99 per month or US$49.99 per year.

“Novelitas expands our commitment to Latino families with stories that reflect their culture, traditions, and faith,” said Bill Abbott, president and CEO of Great American Media. “Through our partnership with Minivela, we’re bringing that commitment to a mobile-first format that gives audiences another way to enjoy uplifting entertainment.”

Manny Ruiz, CEO of Minivela, added: “Latino culture offers a wealth of stories about love, family, and belonging. With these three productions, we’re bringing those connections to vertical storytelling, led by a Christmas romantic comedy that puts faith and family at its heart.”
