Prime Video takes US rights to Sony’s Aussie drama Narrow Road to the Deep North

The Narrow Road to the Deep North centres on a troubled WWII veteran

Prime Video has acquired US rights to The Narrow Road to the Deep North, the Australian war drama from Sony Pictures Television (SPT).

The limited series, which comes from SPT-backed prodco Curio Pictures, is based on Australian author Richard Flanagan’s novel of the same name.

In 2023, Prime Video and SPT announced that the series had been greenlit but at the time it was only confirmed to premiere on the Amazon-owned streamer in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, with SPT handling global distribution.

More recently, a host of licensing deals have been lined up, including with Sky (Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland), the BBC (UK), RTÉ (Ireland), Movistar Plus+ (Spain), Nova (Greece), Max (Central and Eastern Europe), AXN (Portugal), LG (South Korea) and NBC Universal (Latin America). It will debut on April 18.

The series follows an Australian Second World War hero, played by Jacob Elordi, who is haunted by his experiences in a Japanese prisoner of war camp and memories of an affair that sustained him during his darkest moments.

In addition to leads Elodi and Odessa Young (Mothering Sunday, Shirley), the show also stars Ciarán Hinds (Belfast), Olivia DeJonge (Elvis), Simon Baker (Limbo, Breath), Show Kasamatsu (Tokyo Vice), Heather Mitchell (Ricky Stanicky) and Thomas Weatherall (Heartbreak High).

The project is executive produced by Curio Pictures’ Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner, alongside Flanagan, series writer Shaun Grant and director Justin Kurzel.
