Piv Bernth and Lars Hermann on making Apple Tree blossom

Today we hear from Piv Bernth and Lars Hermann, co-founders of Apple Tree Productions, about the growth of the ITV Studios-owned Danish prodco and the challenges facing the Nordic region following Viaplay’s exit from original series.

Apple Tree Productions is a Danish production company, founded by former DR head of drama Piv Bernth and her deputy Lars Hermann in 2017 with backing from ITV Studios.

The duo, whose credits include Nordic noir classics The Bridge and The Killing, have gone on to make series including Blackwater for Sweden’s SVT, Chorus Girls for TV2 Denmark, and One of the Boys for pan-regional streamer Viaplay.

The latter’s exit from original production last year had a major impact across the Scandinavian market, with the streaming landscape still fluid and artificial intelligence set to shake things up further.

Bernth and Hermann spoke to Michael Pickard about these issues and more.
