Netflix to adapt hit manga One Piece

Netflix and Tomorrow Studios copro One Piece

Netflix is set to develop a live-action adaptation of the hit manga series One Piece alongside ITV Studios-backed US prodco Tomorrow Studios.

One Piece follows the adventures of a pirate named Monkey D Luffy and his crew as they venture through oceans and exotic islands in search of the so-called ‘one piece,’ a treasure that allows its owner to become Pirate King.

Netflix and Tomorrow Studios will coproduce the 10-part series, with Steve Maeda onboard as showrunner and Matt Owens as writer. They will both exec produce alongside Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements as well as original author Eiichiro Oda. Netflix will handle the physical production.

The comic book was originally published by Shueisha in 1997 and has since sold over 460 million copies worldwide.

Tomorrow Studios, a joint venture between Adelstein and ITV Studios, is also responsible for Netflix’s other upcoming live-action manga adaptation Cowboy Bebop and upcoming TNT sci-fi drama Snowpiercer.

The One Piece greenlight follows Netflix’s recent bulk acquisition from Japanese art house Studio Ghibli.
