Netflix orders Canadian teen drama Crew Girl from Thunderbird Entertainment 

Coming-of-age teen drama Crew Girl

Netflix has handed a series order to Crew Girl, a coming-of-age teen drama from showrunner and writer Vivian Lin (SkyMed, The Lake) and Vancouver-based Thunderbird Entertainment.

The Canadian series started production in Victoria, British Columbia this week, with Thunderbird producing via its scripted and unscripted division Great Pacific Media.

Crew Girl counts Jeff Norton (Geek Girl, Finding Her Edge), Lindsay Macadam, Hillary Zwick Turner, Tony Chung and Lori Massini among its executive producers, in addition to Lin.

It follows a 16-year-old female rower, played by Miku Martineau (Bet, Star Trek: Section 31), who becomes the coxswain of a dysfunctional all-boys rowing team at an elite prep school on Canada’s east coast.

In addition to Martineau, the cast includes Jessica Paré (Seal Team, Mad Men), Samuel Braun (The Marshmallow Experiment, Time Cut), Kyle Clark (Hello, Goodbye and Everything) and Thomas Cadrot (Scream, So Help Me Todd).

Elsewhere, Netflix announced that Leanne, its comedy series created by Susan McMartin, Chuck Lorre and Leanne Morgan, has been renewed for a second season. Produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros Television, the series follows a woman (played by Leanne Morgan) whose world is turned upside down when her husband of 33 years unexpectedly leaves her for another woman.
