M6, Super RTL, Alpha order green toon

Petronix Defenders is shopped by Mediawan Rights and Alpha

M6 Group in France and Super RTL in Germany have teamed up with Chinese toy maker and media group Alpha to commission an environmental cartoon series from Mediawan-owned ON Kids & Family.

Petronix Defenders (52×13′) follows a team of young superheroes who help save wild animals from around the globe with the help of backpacks that transform into small, technologically advanced animals.

Mediawan Rights is handling the worldwide distribution of the cartoon, except in Asia Pacific and MENA where it will be handled by Alpha.

The comedy-adventure aims to instil values of respecting and protecting the planet and its biodiversity in young viewers, by building and using technology wisely.

Alpha is one of China’s largest animation and entertainment companies, with credits including Super Wings, Rev & Roll, Katuri and Pleasant Goat & Big Big Wolf.

Co-founded by Aton Soumache, Dimitri Rassam and Thierry Pasquet, Paris-based ON Kids & Family last year appointed veteran children’s exec Julien Borde as executive VP, head of television and chief content officer.

Its productions so far include The Little Prince, Le Petit Nicolas, Playmobil: The Movie and Robin Hood and Miraculous.

Coming up in 2021 is The Enchanted Village of Pinocchio (52×11′), a copro with Mediawan-owned Italian producer Palomar, which has Rai in Italy, ZDF in Germany, FTV, VRT in Belgium and Radio Canada on board as broadcasters.

It is also planning to launch its own preschool label, push into live-action content, make acquisitions and set up a digital subsidiary.

In 2019, ON Kids & Family partnered with French comic book creator Joann Sfar to create a new label, The Magical Society, dedicated to developing projects based on the author’s IP.
