History, MTV alumni form indie

History exec Julian P Hobbs and MTV’s Eli Hakami have set up an indie in New York with backing from Sky Vision and October Films.

Talos Films already has scripted and unscripted projects in development with several broadcasters.

Hobbs most recently led scripted development and production at History, where he oversaw The Bible, Vikings and forthcoming reboot Roots. He also oversaw reality hits including Pawn Stars and Storage Wars as VP and executive producer, and headed the feature doc unit.

He had previously been at Discovery Channel, executive producing shows including Encounters at the End of the World. He also had a stint running production at new York Times Television.

Hakami was most recently MTV’s executive VP of current series and programming overseeing series such as Catfish and The Challenge. He was previously senior VP of unscripted programming and production at BBC Worldwide Productions.

He also launched Discovery’s New York and LA development offices and was the broadcaster’s head of development.

Talos Films will create and produce a range of content suitable for a global audience, from event documentaries and docu-dramas to character-driven unscripted series, formatted shows and scripted projects.

It is backed by Sky Vision, the international distribution and production arm of European satcaster Sky, and October Films.

October’s investment is part of an ongoing strategy to grow in the UK and US while remaining independent.

Hobbs and Hakami will serve as co-presidents of Talos Films with Adam Bullmore, MD of October Films, and Sky Vision MD Jane Millichip on the board.
