Euro copro wins best doc at Oscars while streamers Netflix, Apple TV pick up gongs

Mr Nobody Against Putin won best documentary at last night’s Oscar ceremony

European copro Mr Nobody Against Putin took home the award for best documentary at last night’s Oscar ceremony, which also saw Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters bag two gongs.

Mr Nobody Against Putin, which was a copro between Euro broadcasters ZDF, Arte and the BBC, follows Russian schoolteacher Pavel Talankin as he risks everything to expose rising militarism in his classroom.

Directed by David Borenstein and Talankin, it was funded with additional support from the Danish Film Institute and the Czech Audiovisual Fund.

Other winners from the world of TV and streaming on cinema’s biggest night included KPop Demon Hunters, which won in the best animated film and best original song categories.

Meanwhile, another Netflix film, Frankenstein, won best production design. However, the elusive best picture gong, continues to elude the streaming giant, after Frankenstein and Train Dreams lost out to One Battle After Another, which bagged six awards last night.

Apple TV’s blockbuster F1, which starred Brad Pitt, also lost out to the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed film in the best picture category, but won best sound.

All the Empty Rooms, which was released by Netflix globally towards the end of last year, won best documentary short film. Directed and produced by Joshua Seftel, it follows Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp as they embark across the US to memorialise the bedrooms of children killed in school shootings.

Elsewhere, Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski took home the Academy Award for best animated short film for their National Film Board (NFB) of Canada short The Girl Who Cried Pearls.

It marked the second trip down the red carpet for the Montreal animation duo, whose 2007 short film, Madame Tutli-Putli, earned them their first Oscar nomination.

In Canada, The Girl Who Cried Pearls is streaming for free on NFB.ca, YouTube and all NFB apps, and is also available to Crave subscribers. The stop-motion animated film is available in French on Arte across Europe, North Africa and other territories.

The 98th Academy Awards were hosted by Conan O’Brien at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and also saw Jessie Buckley named best actress for her performance in Hamnet and Michael B Jordan win best actor for Sinners, one of four awards the film won last night.
