Disney beams into Indonesia, HK

Walt Disney Television International (Asia Pacific) today launches its Playhouse Disney Channel on pay-TV operator Kabelvision (PT Broadband Multimedia) in the populous Asian territory of Indonesia.

Over the water in Hong Kong, Disney also started beaming preschool net Playhouse Disney on broadband TV today. “With Indonesia and Hong Kong as a launch pad, we look forward to extending the distribution of Playhouse Disney across Southeast Asia and Korea,” said Doug Miller, svp and managing director of Walt Disney Television International (Asia Pacific).

Indonesia and Hong Kong are the fourth and fifth markets to launch Playhouse Disney Channel after the UK, Spain and France. Playhouse initially launched in Asia as a programme block on the flagship Disney Channel in 2000.

Elsewhere in Asia, Disney is set to roll out up to three channels in India later this year, and is planning a broadband TV service in South Korea. The Mouse is also in talks with China’s CCTV-6 for a branded kids block. Disney Channel also launched into Japan last November.
