Constantin Film’s Smilla’s Sense of Snow remake set to debut on SBS Australia

Smilla’s Sense of Snow is based on the 1992 novel by Peter Høeg

German prodco Constantin Film has completed work on a new adaptation of Smilla’s Sense of Snow, a coproduction with streamer Viaplay, ARD Degeto Film, and Baltic Film Services.

Smilla’s Sense of Snow is currently in the final stages of post-production, however details about where it will air remain uncertain.

“We look forward to sharing more details about its rollout. For now, we can say that it will have its world premiere later this summer on SBS Australia,” Constantin Film, Viaplay, and ITV Studios, which handles distribution, told C21.

Directed by BAFTA-winning Amma Asante (The Handmaid’s Tale, Mrs America), the series is based on Peter Høeg’s novel. Asante has penned the script in four episodes along with Tanja Bubbel, Clive Bradley, Tina Hastings, Rebecca Martin, Keith Hodder, Sonya Desai, Julie Nørgaard Jensen, and Greenlandic Pipaluk K Jørgensen.

The remake is set in Copenhagen in 2040, where an energy crisis looms. Smilla Jaspersen (Filippa Coster-Waldau) lives a reclusive life until she meets a young Greenlandic boy who captures her heart. When the boy suddenly dies under mysterious circumstances, Smilla risks everything to uncover the truth.

Smilla’s Sense of Snow was originally published as a novel in 1992 and previously adapted into a feature film in 1997 starring Julia Ormond and directed by Billie August.
