This year, August 24 not only marks Ukraine’s Independence Day but half a year since the full-scale Russian invasion of the country began, when all film and TV production across the country stopped and TV channels launched a joint news ‘marathon.’

The Organisation of Ukrainian Producers, set up in March, after the war began, has helped organise premieres for some of the first documentaries filmed in the country during the first months of the war: Mariupol: Unlost Hope, Nine Lives, Station of Hope and The Lost House.

Set to be screened on August 24 in 40 cities around the world – 31 years after Ukraine declared independence from the USSR in 1991 – the films provide powerful accounts of the country’s resistance and document the war through the eyes of Ukrainians.

C21 spoke with Ukrainian producers Daria Leygonie-Fialko and Igor Storchak, who are currently based in France and Switzerland respectively, about securing international distribution for the documentaries as well as the ongoing, devastating impact of the war on the Ukrainian TV industry and how the global business can help to support it.
