May is the month that international TV buyers usually fly to Hollywood, Toronto, Rio de Janeiro or Busan to check out new programmes they might want to acquire. Under the current Covid-19 pandemic, however, they are instead heading to digital screenings to do that.
Reflecting the needs of the market at this challenging time, C21 Digital Screenings publishes a Hot Properties playlist each month, unearthing buzzworthy new shows from the world’s leading distributors that can revive schedules worldwide.
On the Hot Properties playlist for this month, we have a strong selection of titles to suit all buyers’ requirements. These range from action-packed period crime drama Miss Scarlet & the Duke from A+E Networks, a show that launched to great numbers on Alibi in the UK last month, to ZDF Enterprises’ Top Dog, a contemporary Nordic crime story from the acclaimed producers of Bron (aka The Bridge).
More hot drama comes in the form of Nicole Taylor’s The Nest, from All3Media International, about a wealthy couple and a teenage girl who make a pact that will change all of their lives forever; while eOne’s Designated Survivor, starring Emmy- and Golden Globe-winner Kiefer Sutherland (24), follows a national crisis of a different kind.
Patria, meanwhile, is an HBO Europe drama that tells the story of the Spanish Basque Country threatened by the separatist terrorism of ETA, through the eyes of two families. Written by Aitor Gabilondo, it is based on the bestselling novel by Fernando Aramburu.
On the factual front, this month we put the spotlight on sports doc Men of Hope, from Germany’s Autentic Distribution. To reach all those football-starved masses, here’s a doc about a German-Croatian coach who wants to train the Afghan national football team to qualify for the 2019 Asia cup.
And for channels used to airing celebrity-laden fare, check out Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins from Banijay Rights; it strips 12 well-known faces of their celebrity status and puts them through one of the toughest tests of their lives. More feel-good factual comes with Dynamo (Passion), mixing jaw-dropping magic with the story of the eponymous magician’s road to recovery after a career-threatening illness.
And to reach those audiences unable to travel, you could take a look at Greek Island Odyssey with Bettany Hughes, from UK-based Drive, in which the presenter embarks on an epic journey to unpack the myths and legends of the Greek islands.
Playing to the current situation for many viewers, Isolation Stories from ITV Studios offers a collection of four funny, sad, heartwarming and poignant stories, told by four separate teams, from isolation to an audience in isolation. Another factual title that plays on the heart strings is Legacy List from NENT Studios UK, in which we explore a family’s emotional attachment to possessions during a house move.
The factual titles on the playlist are rounded out by Becoming Rocky (Branded Studios), about the making of the classic Sylvester Stallone movies, and Mega Metro (Beyond), tracing the enormous engineering challenges faced by the greatest public transport infrastructure project in Australia’s history.
With so many children at home these days, broadcasters are looking for more kids’ content. Our playlist contains some strong titles, such as 9 Story Media’s Moon & Me, inspired by much-loved tales of toys that come to life when nobody is looking, as well as Cake’s CBeebies hit Kiri & Lou, a gently humorous series from Antony Elworthy (Coraline) and voiced by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords). And chiming in with the eco mindset of an increasing number of children, MeteoHeroes from Mondo TV is a comedy that raises children’s awareness of ecology and respect for nature.
