Rising Star reaches Spain

A Spanish broadcaster has become the latest channel to pick up hit Israeli format Rising Star, which was acquired by UK commercial broadcaster ITV only this week.

Atresmedia Television will adapt the format after striking a deal with the global distribution and production arm of Keshet Media Group.

The interactive talent show was originally produced by Tedy Productions for Keshet Broadcasting’s Channel 2 and premiered in September, drawing a 46% audience share.

The show allows viewers to vote on the efforts of singers in real time as they perform behind a screen, giving them immediate feedback. If the performer secures 70% of the viewers’ and judges’ votes, the screen rises and the performer is revealed.

The Israeli show’s associated app, which allows viewers to vote, has been downloaded 1.5 million times so far and generated nine million votes, Keshet claimed.

Keshet believes the format “hails a new era in home entertainment,” with viewers playing “an integral role in every decision made on the show throughout the entire season.”

The format already has an extensive footprint across Europe. Along with ITV in the UK,  it has been acquired by broadcasters in Hungary, Germany, France, Italy and Scandinavia.

Rising Star is also set to be adapted in the US and Russia.
