TelevisaUnivision adapts MBC K-drama She Was Pretty for Mexico

She Was Pretty remains a huge K-drama hit 10 years after its premiere

TelevisaUnivision is preparing a Mexican version of She Was Pretty, the hit K-drama from South Korea’s MBC, under the local title Cuando fui bonita.

The new production, made for Canal 5, is being produced by Pedro Ortiz de Pinedo and will star Geraldine Galván and Daniel Gama.

The telenovela follows a young woman who, after being considered beautiful during childhood, grows up dealing with insecurities and physical changes that affect her self-esteem. Years later, she reconnects with her childhood love, who fails to recognise her, sparking romantic entanglements and reflections on beauty and identity.

The cast also includes Daniela Gallardo, Sergio Madrigal Aspe, Carmen Muñoz, Renata Bieletto, Juan Antonio Edwards, Iván Mora and Aroa Gimeno.

The original series She Was Pretty, which aired on MBC in 2015, became a hit in Korea and internationally, particularly in China, and established itself as one of the standout success stories in the K-drama space.

The adaptation joins a growing number of international remakes commissioned by TelevisaUnivision. This month alone, the company will have premiered two stories based on telenovelas created by Argentinian writer Enrique Estevanez: Guardián de mi vida, adapted from Amor en custodia (2005), and Tan cerca de ti nace el amor, the Mexican version of Somos familia (2014).
