Lucky 13 is a new Shaquille O’Neal and Gina Rodriguez-fronted gameshow which debuts on ABC in the US this week, the brainchild of former Celador International MD, Adrian Woolfe – one time distributor of hit Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

Woolfe set up London- and Los Angeles-based production/distribution outfit Studio 1 Entertainment six years ago together with one-time ITV entertainment chief Claudia Rosencrantz.

While Rosencrantz departed earlier this year, the company has released a string of formats including quiz show The Imposter, dating format Club Cougar and adventure/talent mash-up Sing to Survive.

But this week ABC debuts Studio 1’s biggest title to date with Lucky 13, backed by Kevin Bacon, which Woolfe says shares a lot of its DNA with Millionaire, and the company is hoping will score similar success.

The exec spoke with Clive Whittingham about the show, why entertainment formats can still buck the downturn being seen elsewhere in the industry, why self-financing is becoming increasingly important, and why the human touch will for the time being continue to trump AI.
