SPT Lat Am lines up Mexican adaptation of Doc, period drama Carlota, Niñas Mal reboot

Doc is adapted from the Italian series which has been a global hit

LA SCREENINGS: Sony Pictures Television (SPT) presented Mexican series Doc and Carlota, and a spin-off of teen drama Niñas Mal, at its LA Screenings presentation on Tuesday.

The projects were announced by John Rossiter, exec VP of distribution and channels for Latin America, during the screening SPT held in Los Angeles for buyers in the region.

Señoras Mal is part of the first batch of fiction that SPT has announced since Argentine Coty Cagliolo took over as senior VP and MD of production for Latin America and US Hispanic.

Niñas Mal, which premiered on MTV Latin America in 2010 and had a second season in 2013, follows a group of rebellious teenagers from wealthy families in Mexico who are sent to a “re-education” school for young ladies run by a conservative woman.

Señoras Mal will feature new characters and talent, and will also bring back some of the original series’ cast members, including actresses Isabel Burr, Cassandra Sánchez Navarro, and Claudia Álvarez.

As with the recent Latin American series Yo no soy Mendoza and Enloqueciendo contigo, which SPT licensed to Netflix and Disney+ respectively, with this series the company will follow the model of retaining IP and maximising windowing.

Doc, meanwhile, is the Mexican adaptation of an Italian series, which has been a hit in Italy and globally and has an American version on Fox.

The Mexican version will follow Andrés Ferrara, a hospital’s director of inpatient care who loses his memory of the last 12 years of his life after an assassination attempt.

It will star Juan Pablo Medina in the lead role alongside Gabriela de la Garza, Iván Sánchez, Erick Chapa, and Giuseppe Gamba.

The series will be directed by Fran Franco, Andrés López, and Harold Ariza and produced by Coty Cagliolo and Carlos Quintanilla of the SPT Lat Am team, along with Alejandro García and Madelaine Contreras.

“Bringing globally successful intellectual properties like Doc, which has performed tremendously in the US ratings, to local audiences is at the heart of our strategy,” said Rossiter.

“By adapting powerful, proven stories from a local perspective, we connect more deeply with audiences while strengthening our regional presence as storytellers. It’s about combining global scale with local relevance,” he added.

The American adaptation of Doc, starring Molly Parker and produced by SPT Studios, has already been renewed for a second season by Fox.

Carlota, meanwhile, is a 10×45’ production that tells the true story of Carlota of Habsburg, the first Empress of Mexico.

It will star pop icon Belinda as Carlota, alongside Spaniards Jaime Lorente, from Money Heist, and Miguel Ángel Silvestre, from Sense8. The cast is completed by Mexican Mabel Cadena.

Alejandro Bazzano (Money Heist) and Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos (Like Water for Chocolate) are directing.

Coty Cagliolo, Carlos Quintanilla, Alejandro García and Madelaine Contreras also appear as producers.

“Filmed in Mexico, Colombia, and Spain, Carlota is a key milestone in our journey to consolidate Sony Pictures Television as a leading entertainment producer in Latin America. This project reaffirms our commitment to creating first-rate stories that connect with audiences not only in Latin America but around the world,” said Rossiter.
