Matthew Deaner is stepping down from his role as CEO of industry body Screen Producers Australia (SPA) after 14 years.

SPA confirmed Zoe Angus will serve as acting executive director while the organisation seeks a permanent replacement. Deaner said he aims to pursue other opportunities.

The organisation has paid tribute to Deaner’s contribution, describing him as a passionate advocate for Australian screen producers and a strong voice for the audiovisual sector, both domestically and internationally.

Under his leadership, the SPA expanded its engagement with government and key stakeholders, enhanced member services, launched pathway programmes such as Ones to Watch and expanded the Screen Forever conference and market, it said.

Deaner was also involved in SPA’s long-running advocacy for local content obligations on global streaming platforms and helped deliver funding for the local industry.

This month, Deaner told the Australian parliament’s Joint Committee on Artificial Intelligence about SPA’s concerns regarding consent, compensation and transparency around the industry’s approach to AI.

Tracey Vieira, president of the SPA council, said: “Matt has been an exceptional leader for SPA and a tireless champion for Australian screen producers. His commitment, energy and strategic vision have helped strengthen the association and advance the interests of producers across the country.”

Deaner said: “It has been an enormous privilege to lead SPA and work alongside such a talented and committed community of producers. I am proud of what we have achieved together and grateful for the support of the members, staff and industry partners throughout my time with the association.

“After 14 years of what’s been both a very rewarding and equally intense role, it’s time for the next iteration of our organisation and for me to pursue other opportunities.”
