Sky Deutschland spots Spitting Image

BritBox has ordered a second run of the rebooted Spitting Image

Sky Deutschland has ordered a localised version of UK satirical puppet sketch show Spitting Image, which was rebooted recently by streaming service BritBox.

The German version of the show will feature a 50/50 mix of content from the English-language version redubbed by German voice artists alongside new topical local sketches written by German comedy writers.

Featuring puppets of prominent national figures in Germany, the sketches will be filmed in the UK Spitting Image studio close to transmission this autumn to ensure maximum topicality.

Spitting Image recently returned to screens after being revived by comedy specialist Avalon for BBC Studios and ITV’s joint-venture streaming service BritBox, which ordered a second run of the reboot last year.

Famous German faces such as Angela Merkel and Jürgen Klopp featured heavily in season one of the show. Avalon said among the puppets joining them in the local version will be ones of Armin Laschet, Markus Söder, Sebastian Kurz, Barbara Schöneberger and Thomas Müller.

Roger Law, the co-creator of Spitting Image who heads the show’s creative team, said: “Unlike Boris Johnson, I’m delighted that Spitting Image is working in collaboration with Sky Deutschland. The puppets are terribly excited and very busy perfecting their German. The show probably won’t be about Brexit, the World Cup or motorways, but who knows. You can never be too sure about Spitting Image.”

Christian Asanger, VP of entertainment at Sky Deutschland, said: “Spitting Image is a cult show. With the world’s first local version of this successful British format, we are adding another innovative Sky original to our comedy portfolio.

“Whether a scientist, sportsman or TV star, German celebrities will soon be shivering in front of Spitting Image and, in keeping with the Bundestag elections in September, German political figures will also get their money’s worth.”

Other puppets set to feature in season two include Joe Biden, Boris Johnson, Prince Andrew, Vladimir Putin, Harry & Meghan, Beyoncé, Angela Merkel, Dwayne Johnson, Ed Sheeran, Elon Musk, Adele, Covid-19, James Corden, Emmanuel Macron, Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Trump and Dominic Cummings.

The bespoke German elements will be produced by Avalon and Redseven Entertainment, producer Georg Kappenstein, executive producer Sebastian Benthues and head writer Elmar Freels.

The executive producers for Avalon are Jeff Westbrook, Joanna Beresford, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner and Law. The BritBox commissioning executive is Nana Hughes.
