Cartoons on the Bay, due to take place in Italy early next month, has been postponed, making it the latest TV event to be disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak.

Rai Com informed delegates today that the event’s 24th edition will no longer take place between April 2 and 5 in Pescara, with the rearranged dates for 2020 set to be announced in the next few days.

The commercial arm of the Italian pubcaster cited “developments related to the Covid-19 emergency throughout Italy, Europe and the rest of the world” as the reason for the postponement.

Italy has so far been the most seriously affected European country, with a total of 107 people killed by the coronavirus there.

“This difficult decision was made also considering the need of the organiser, Rai Company, to adopt every possible protective health measure for the staff and guests involved in the event,” Rai Com said.

The Pulcinella Awards competition, which usually takes place as part of Cartoons on the Bay, will go ahead as normal, Rai Com added.

The spread of coronavirus is seriously affecting the TV events calendar, with MipTV organiser Reed Midem yesterday confirming, after days of speculation, that this year’s edition of the event is cancelled as a result of coronavirus.

The annual market had been scheduled to take place in Cannes, France, from March 30 to April 2.

Numerous other festivals have also been affected, along with promotional events ahead of the launch of streamer Disney+.

The World Health Organization has issued advice to the public on how to protect themselves and others from the virus.

The global coronavirus death toll has surpassed 3,000 but most people who become infected experience only mild illness and recover.
