Nickelodeon recruits Rainbow Rangers

Rainbow Rangers

Nickelodeon has taken the exclusive US broadcast rights to a forthcoming preschool show from children’s content firm Genius Brands International (GBI).

Nick Jr will air Rainbow Rangers (52×11′) in the US and Caribbean Basin following the deal with GBI, which is currently developing the series alongside creatives who have worked on Disney’s The Lion King and Frozen.

The CGI-animated series is about seven magical girls from the other side of the rainbow who protect Earth from a wicked villain through teamwork, bravery, creativity and compassion.

It is being developed with Lion King director Rob Minkoff, Frozen co-writer Shane Morris, Tim Mansfield and Elise Allen, with Disney alum Ruben Aquino creating key designs.

Andy Heyward, GBI chairman and CEO, is an executive producer on the show, which made its debut at MipJunior last year.

Susie Lecker, executive VP and chief brand officer at Mattel’s Toy Box, the toy partner for the property, said the series “will strike a relevant chord with its mission-based adventures and message of empowerment for preschool girls.”

In related news, the international arm of Nickelodeon-owner Viacom has partnered with Indonesian telco Telkomsel to launch its Nickelodeon Play and Nick Jr. Play apps in Indonesia.

The apps will launch in the third quarter of 2017 and in the next few months, respectively, and will allow viewers to watch Nick programming on demand alongside games and shortform video.
