Netflix mines UK rights to documentary Gold: A Journey with Idris Elba

Gold: A Journey with Idris Elba will launch on Netflix on July 24

Netflix has acquired the UK rights to Gold: A Journey with Idris Elba, which made its debut on the YouTube channel of The World Gold Council last year.

Produced by Pioneer Productions and sold by Passion Distribution, the feature documentary will launch on the streamer on July 24.

It was made for The World Gold Council, an international trade association for the gold industry based in the UK.

The doc seeks to investigate the power of gold and how it impacts different cultures, economies and societies in the 21st century.

The Golden Globe award-winning English actor, director, musician and producer visits Ghana, South Africa, Canada and London to examine our love affair with the precious metal.

It was executive produced by Peter Collins and directed by Paul Bradshaw, with Colin Byne, Lucy Joyner and Helen Shearer as producers. Nick Tanner, Passion Distribution’s director of sales and coproductions, brokered the deal.

Luther and Hijack star Elba recently partnered with former BBC and Pulse Films exec Diene Petterle to set up production company 22 Summer with a focus on premium factual content.

The fledgling label subsumed Elba’s existing UK prodco, Green Door Pictures, whose credits include Hijack for Apple TV+, Sky One comedy In the Long Run, Netflix comedy series Turn Up Charlie and four-part BBC documentary series Idris Elba’s Fight School.
