Netflix leans into true crime with drama, documentary commissions out of Spain

The cast of Berlin & the Lady with an Ermine on stage in Madrid today

Netflix has commissioned three new projects from Spain, including a documentary about the murder of local politician Miguel Ángel Blanco and a true crime period drama.

The global streamer unveiled the commissions as part of its 2026 slate at an event in Madrid this morning, showcasing a range of series, films and non-fiction content, both Spanish and international.

Filming has just begun on Lobo, a miniseries based on the real-life case of Manuel Blanco Romasanta, a travelling tailor who went down in history as Spain’s first documented serial killer. During his trial in rural 19th-century Galicia, he claimed to be a werewolf.

Written by Alberto Marini and Juan Galiñanes, it stars Luis Tosar and Tristán Ulloa and is directed by Alberto Marini and Javier Rodríguez Delgado and produced by Vaca Films.

The company also announced Miguel Ángel Blanco: las 48 horas que lo cambiaron todo, which is in post-production.

The documentary film, directed by Jon Sistiaga and Juanjo López and produced by The Tintirin Team, explores the kidnapping and murder of Spanish economist and politician Ángel Blanco by the Basque separatist group ETA in 1997.

Netflix said the documentary revisits a crucial moment of solidarity and compassion that marked a watershed in the country’s fight against terrorism.

En nombre de otro, meanwhile, is a new film currently in production written and directed by Oriol Paulo and produced by Juanita Films. Described as a fast-paced thriller where nothing is what it seems, the film stars Eduard Fernández, Mario Casas, Blanca Suárez, Nicolás Francella, and Alexandra Jiménez.

The Spanish slate also includes Rafa, a sports documentary following Rafael Nadal as he brings the curtain down on his hugely successful tennis career. Directed by Zachary Heinzerling, it is being made by Skydance Sports.

During the event, Tosar and Ulloa took to the stage to present Lobo, while Casas, Suárez and Francella introduced their feature film En nombre de otro.

Other prominent figures from the Spanish entertainment industry who presented projects that will premiere on Netflix this year included the leads of The Final Problem (Jose Coronado, Maribel Verdú, Martiño Rivas); Gracias, equipo (Raúl Tejón, Blanca Martínez and Maribel Verdú); and Salvador (Luis Tosar and Claudia Salas).

There were also appearances by the stars of Murder in Galicia (Tristán Ulloa); The Child (Belén Cuesta and Karra Elejalde); Berlin & the Lady with an Ermine (Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner, Joel Sánchez and Tristán Ulloa); 53 Sundays (Carmen Machi, Javier Gutiérrez and Javier Cámara); and A Day Like No Other (Raphael).
