Netflix hands swift renewal to coming-of-age rowing drama Crew Girl

Crew Girl comes from Blue Ant Studios

Netflix has renewed Crew Girl for a second season after the Canadian coming-of-age drama debuted to strong viewership and positive critical reception less than two weeks ago.

The series, produced by Blue Ant Studios and developed by Vivian Lin (SkyMed, The Lake) and Morwyn Brebner (Anna Pigeon, Coroner), has racked up more than 16 million views since its launch, per Netflix’s weekly viewership charts.

The show is currently number two on the streamer’s global TV chart and has entered the top 10 in more than 90 countries.

Filmed last year in Victoria, British Columbia, Crew Girl stars Miku Martineau (Bet, Star Trek: Section 31) as a 16-year-old female rower who becomes the coxswain of a dysfunctional all-boys rowing team at an elite prep school on Canada’s east coast. The cast also includes Jessica Paré, Sam Braun, Kyle Clark and Thomas Cadrot.

The series counts Lin, Jeff Norton, Lindsay Macadam, Hillary Zwick Turner, Tony Chung, Lori Massini among its executive producers alongside Blue Ant Studios’ Matthew Hornburg, Mark Bishop and Jennifer McCarron.

Crew Girl was commissioned by Netflix last year. At the time, the show was produced by Vancouver-based Thunderbird, which was acquired by Blue Ant Media earlier this year.
