Netflix extends Sesame Street series deal, orders Gabby’s Dollhouse spin-off

Netflix picked up Sesame Street from HBO Max last year

Netflix has extended its series deal for Sesame Street and ordered a spin-off to Gabby’s Dollhouse, as well as a new preschool series, in a round of kids’ content greenlights.

The Sesame Street deal will see Sesame Workshop deliver new seasons of the classic show through to season 62. S57 has been launching on Netflix in volumes throughout this year, with volumes five and six scheduled for 2027.

Netflix picked up the long-running series last year, after Warner Bros Discovery-owned HBO Max decided not to renew its streaming deal for the show. Episodes are also available day-and-date on US pubcaster PBS.

Alongside the new seasons, Netflix, Sesame Workshop and Rideback are developing a Sesame Street feature film.

The Gabby’s Dollhouse spin-off will be titled Doozie’s Doghouse

The Gabby’s Dollhouse spin-off, Doozie’s Doghouse, is a mixed-media series centred on Gabby’s sister Doozie and her dog friends. Premiering in November, the 7×22’ companion series is aimed at preschoolers and produced by DreamWorks Animation.

It is created and exec produced by Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey, who created the hit Gabby’s Dollhouse series.

In related news, Netflix has announced that the previously untitled Gabby’s Dollhouse baking and crafting competition series will be called Gabby’s Dollhouse: Makers & Bakers.

The other new preschool series is Puppy Pirates, an animated show from creator Matthew Fernandes. Produced by Boat Rocker Studios and its subsidiary Industrial Brothers, the series follows four heroic hounds who sail the high seas to fetch things that are lost.

Meanwhile, Netflix has renewed animated series Bad Dinosaurs for S2-3. The first season of the prehistoric comedy debuted in 2024, since when it has accumulated nearly 55 million views, according to the streamer.

Netflix also noted that Bad Dinosaurs spent five weeks on its global top 10 list and reached the top 10 in 67 countries. Created by Joel Veitch, Alex Mallinson and David Shute, the series is produced by UK-based Snafu Pictures.

In other news, Netflix has launched a “low-stimulation collection” of content, designed to make it easier for parents to find shows and films with slower pacing and softer visuals for smaller children. Series include Cartoon Saloon’s Puffin Rock, Glen Kleane Productions’ Trash Truck and Genius Brands’ Llama Llama.

Additionally, Netflix has launched two new playlists of curated collections that autoplay continuous episodes, which it said aims to cut down on scrolling and title picking. The All-Star Preschool Playlist rounds up “can’t-miss picks” for its youngest viewers, while the Ultimate Kids Playlist comprises favourite shows for kids aged 5-8.
