Lions Gate snags Britney

After a disappointing financial quarter, Lions Gate’s animation partner, CineGroupe is hoping to boost its numbers with a new Britney Spears animated series.

{We’re developing at least one project, and maybe two, but we are definitely developing an animated show with Britney,{ said Lions Gate ceo Jon Feltheimer in an investor conference call yesterday. No further details on the series were released.

In financial news, Lions Gate’s overall performance for the last quarter ending September 30th, was up with revenues of US $778million, a 30% increase over this quarter last year’s US $59.7million.

The company’s film and television divisions saw earnings increases, however CineGroupe mirrored tough times in the animation business by showing a decisive drop in earnings.

CineGroupe's revenue for this quarter was US $8.5 million, a 17% decrease from US $10.2 million last year.

It delivered 28.0 half-hours of programming during the quarter, compared to 35.5 half-hours delivered a year ago.

Lions Gate’s film division pulled most of the earnings weight for the company with revenues of US $50.2million, a 59% increase from US $31.5million in the prior year's second quarter.

The TV division's revenue grew to US $17.8million, a 7% increase from US $16.7million in the comparable quarter last year.

The gain is attributed in large part to US and international sales of nine episodes of one hour sci-fi drama The Dead Zone, and Lions Gate’s slate of TV movies including: The Pilot’s Wife, Cabin Pressure, and Attack on the Queen.
