Irish-Australian drama Mix Tape compiles buyers including BBC, RTÉ, Pickbox

Mix Tape was adapted from the novel by Jane Sanderson

Broadcasters and streamers including the BBC in the UK have acquired Mix Tape, the forthcoming Irish-Australian romantic drama coproduction that launches in Australia on Binge today.

As well as the BBC, RTÉ in Ireland, MTV3 in Finland and Pickbox in Central and Eastern Europe will air the 4×60′ series, which is distributed internationally by Boat Rocker.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Jane Sanderson, the project originated from Irish production company Subotica and coproduced with Australia’s Aquarius Films in association with Boat Rocker.

Pickbox has rights in Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Bulgaria for Pickbox Now and Pickbox TV.

The series, which premieres on Foxtel Group-owned streamer Binge in Australia today, stars Teresa Palmer, Jim Sturgess, Florence Hunt and Rory Walton-Smith.

Moving between their teenage romance in Sheffield, UK in 1989 and the modern-day reality of their adult relationships, Mix Tape follows Daniel and Alison, now living on opposite sides of the world, as they reconnect through a song from their past and explore whether this is the love, and life, they were meant to have.

The BBC deal was brokered by Sue Deeks, head of BBC programme acquisition, and Patrick Roberts, senior VP of global sales at Boat Rocker Studios.

Deeks said: “Accompanied by an absolutely cracking 80s soundtrack, Mix Tape is an enjoyable blend of nostalgia, romance and heartbreak – it really is the perfect summer treat.”

The series is written by Jo Spain and directed by Lucy Gaffy. The series is produced by Aoife O’Sullivan and Tristan Orpen Lynch for Subotica and Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford for Aquarius Films.

Alison Hurbert-Burns, Lana Greenhalgh and Clare Mirabello serve as executive producers alongside David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Nick Nantell and Erik Pack for Boat Rocker and Marc Lorber.

The series received major production investment from the Foxtel Group in association with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and Screen Australia. It was financed with support from the Finnish Impact Film Fund, Screen NSW’s Made in NSW Fund and The Post Lounge.
