Fox launches Malaysia production hub for Extracted format

The Extracted production hub is in Lake Kenyir, Malaysia

MIPCOM: Fox Entertainment Global has opened a production hub in Lake Kenyir, Malaysia, which it is positioning as a base for international licensees of its survival competition format Extracted.

Fox will present the facility to buyers in client briefings at Mipcom in Cannes this week. Season three of the US network series, which Fox said has reached more than 45 million viewers across its first two seasons, has just wrapped at the hub.

The company said the hub is purpose-built around the needs of the US series and international adaptations of it. It comprises a permanent headquarters and sets, local crews, established production workflows and scalable production models. Fox said this allows licensees to step into a production that has already been built and tested, rather than spending months recreating the world of the show, cutting pre-production time and cost.

Extracted’s Malaysian production operation “deploys more cameras than the Super Bowl,” claimed Fox.

“The infrastructure we’ve built in this Malaysia hub accelerates the series’ international expansion, offering licensees the infrastructure and expertise to create their own versions more efficiently, while delivering the scale and intensity that make the show so compelling,” said Prentiss Fraser, president of Fox Entertainment Global.

Fox said the location is accessible to international productions, with regional airports, transportation, accommodation and medical services, as well as English-speaking crews. It added that qualifying productions can access Malaysian tax incentives of up to 30% on qualifying spend. Licensees can also claim incentives in neighbouring Australia on qualifying post-production expenditure there, Fox said.

In Extracted, ordinary people attempt to survive alone in a wilderness with no training, supplies or contact with the outside world. Their loved ones watch from a remote headquarters and decide whether to let them continue or press an “extract” button, which ends the contestant’s journey and the family’s chance at the grand prize.

The show debuted on Fox in 2025, and is produced by B17 Entertainment, Balboa Productions, Insight Productions and Fox Entertainment.
