Former Goldman Sachs NZ boss Andrew Barclay appointed chair of TVNZ

The former head of Goldman Sach New Zealand, Andrew Barclay, has been appointed by the NZ government to chair public broadcaster TVNZ.

Andrew Barclay

Barclay was with Goldman Sachs for over 25 years, joining in 1999 and was named managing director in 2006. The executive announced his departure from the firm in May.

NZ Minister for media and communications Paul Goldsmith said that Barclay’s extensive finance background provided “the skills to provide continued strong oversight of financial performance and strategic decision-making, which are critical for a commercially focused public broadcaster like TVNZ.”

Barclay will join the TVNZ board on November 3, following the early retirement of current chair Alastair Carruthers on November 2. As revealed last week.

Carruthers’ exit was a surprise for the New Zealand sector, with his departure cutting short his contracted three-year term. Carruthers was appointed chair in July 2023, taking the position from his then-role as chair at the NZ Film Commission.
