TVNZ chair Alastair Carruthers steps down before end of term

The chair of TVNZ, Alastair Carruthers, is stepping down from his position steering New Zealand’s public broadcaster.

An official announcement has yet to be made by the New Zealand government, however TVNZ has confirmed Carruthers’ intentions to C21 with no further detail supplied at this stage.

Carruthers’ exit will be a surprise for the New Zealand media landscape, with his departure cutting short his contracted three-year term. Carruthers was appointed chair in July 2023, taking the position from his then-role as chair at the NZ Film Commission.

The exec took on the tenure amid a board reshuffle following the collapse of plans to merge TVNZ’s assets with the country’s government-owned radio station, RNZ. It is understood succession planning will be revealed as the ministry announces his departure.
