Disney+ renews football doc Welcome to Wrexham for three more seasons

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC

US-based streamer Disney+ has renewed FX’s obs doc Welcome to Wrexham, from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, for three more seasons.

The renewal will carry the show through an eighth season, expected to stream through 2029. The news comes as the series prepares to premiere its fifth season on Friday, May 15, with the first two episodes available exclusively on Disney+.

The doc follows the Hollywood stars as they try to rebuild Wrexham FC and the community around it in North Wales.

The team has won three promotions in three seasons, climbing from the semi-professional National League into the Championship – one tier below the Premier League. No side had achieved that before and, given the Red Dragons are currently one place and four points outside the Championship play-offs, they may yet make it four promotions in a row over the coming weeks.

“When we launched ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ we never imagined the impact it would have on the club and the town while creating one of TV’s most successful and beloved docuseries,” said Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment. “This three-season renewal is a testament to the vision of Rob and Ryan and the enduring connection they’ve built with fans around the world.”

“A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history,” said McElhenney and Reynolds, co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC.

The series is executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Humphrey Ker, Nicholas Frenkel, George Dewey and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma, and Andy Thomas. It is produced by More Better Productions, Maximum Effort, 3 Arts Entertainment and Boardwalk Pictures.
