Dark Slope, No Equal option rights to Douglas Coupland novel Generation X

Dark Slope Studios and No Equal Entertainment have acquired the screen rights to Douglas Coupland’s 1991 novel Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, with plans to develop it as a premium TV series.

The Canadian companies will jointly develop the adaptation, which marks the latest project in their multi-title development partnership.

Generation X follows three friends who leave behind conventional careers and consumer culture to live together in the California desert. The novel, which has been translated into more than 35 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide, is credited for popularising the term ‘Generation X’ as a modern cultural descriptor.

The option deal is part of Dark Slope’s push into premium scripted film and television projects with international potential.

Dark Slope and No Equal previously announced a multi-project development deal including drama series Waking Wonderland, from showrunner Matt Hastings and Tina Hastings, and half-hour comedy Snakes & Lattes, created by actors-turned-writers Kat Barrell and Natalie Lisinska.

No Equal principal JB Sugar has an existing relationship with Coupland, having produced, directed and written episodes of the TV adaptation of his novel jPod. The companies are also developing a feature adaptation of Coupland’s The Gum Thief, with Sugar attached to direct.

Canadian-born author and visual artist Coupland is attached to the Generation X project, although no writer, showrunner, network or streamer has yet been announced.
