Chilean production company Fábula is opening an office in Madrid and indicated it will soon do the same in Buenos Aires as part of an international expansion drive.

The company aims to develop local productions in new markets and strengthen its development network in Latin America.

In a LinkedIn post, the company explained the expansion is intended to “reach new talent, generate local partnerships, and develop productions with their own identity in each territory, while maintaining the creative stamp that has accompanied us since our beginnings.”

In statements to the Chilean media outlet The Clinic, Fábula’s corporate development director Paulina Palacios indicated the decision was primarily motivated by the need to work with teams that have in-depth knowledge of each market.

“We needed people who truly understood the sensibilities, idiosyncrasies, humour and codes of each country. We learned that when we opened in Mexico and realised there are no shortcuts. Without that local knowledge, any story sounds foreign,” he said.

According to the executive, there are also strategic and financial reasons for the expansion. “Expanding allows us to spread that risk and access support mechanisms that were previously unavailable to us. It also brings us closer to the regional offices of the platforms, which speeds up decision-making,” she noted. The goal is to consolidate Fábula as a production company with an increasingly regional focus.

The Madrid office will be headed by Chilean executive Álvaro Cabello, accompanied by Paz Lázaro as content director and Yesika Mena as production director. The Argentine subsidiary, meanwhile, is still being organised, although the production company assured that its launch is well underway.

Both offices are already developing film, series and non-fiction projects specifically designed for the Spanish and Argentine markets.

The intention is for both locations to participate in the entire creative and production process and to integrate into Fábula’s international network, along with its operations in Santiago, Mexico City and Los Angeles.

The expansion broadens the international presence of Fábula, which already operates in Chile, Mexico and the US. Founded by brothers Juan de Dios Larraín and Pablo Larraín, the production company has established itself as one of the leading independent studios in the region.

In addition, the company maintains a close relationship with Netflix, for which it is preparing the miniseries Mis muertos tristes and the recently announced film Once, both directed by Pablo Larraín.
