Canuck veterans set up Headspinner

The former president of Radical Sheep Productions and the co-creator of Canadian sitcom The Stanley Dynamic have launched a new production outfit based in Toronto.

Michelle Melanson

Headspinner Productions, formed by Radical Sheep alum Michelle Melanson and Ken Cuperus, will be a full-service development and production outfit.

Melanson (Stella & Sam, Yup Yups) and Cuperus (Stargate: Atlantis, The Listener) said their prodco would “bring a creator-driven approach to the international content industry.”

Headspinner already has three shows on its slate including family event drama Cabin 51 and Made in China, a dramedy about international adoption. Both are in development with Canadian broadcasters and seeking international partners.

Also in development is an as-yet-untitled teen single-camera sitcom, which has a US broadcaster attached.

“We are thrilled to combine forces and work on projects that are truly meaningful to us,” said Melanson. “Headspinner is now born into the world and with our experience, passion and energy we look forward to partnering with the best to create original, groundbreaking content.”

Headspinner said it is looking to discuss coproduction, partnerships and service production opportunities in youth live-action and animation, as well as primetime comedy and drama shows.

Melanson developed and produced shows including The Next Step, Fangbone!, The Bagel & Becky Show, and Tee & Mo while at Radical Sheep, while Cuperus has credits on shows such as Frankie Drake. He also co-created and was showrunner on the YTV series The Stanley Dynamic, which ran for 52 episodes.
