Rex – Vienna Calling: the crime-fighting canine and detective Max Steiner

MR Film/Anjeza Cikopano

MIPCOM: Beta Film, MR Film, Seven. One and ORF have teamed up for Rex – Vienna Calling, a series of six feature-length episodes that will bring the titular police dog back home to Austria, where the first series in the Rex franchise began in 1994.

In Rex – Vienna Calling, the crime-fighting canine joins his partner, Detective Max Steiner (Maximilian Brückner), to solve the toughest cases in the Austrian capital. Together with Max’s colleague Felix Burger (Ferdinand Seebacher), they will face bomb threats, solve a spectacular diamond robbery and find the murderer of a baker who is pushed into his own oven.

The homicide unit is supported by Evelyn Leitner (Doris Golpashin). Esther Rauch (Snow) and Andreas Kopriva (Jeanny: The Fifth Girl) share directing credits. It is produced by MR Film in coproduction with Seven. One and ORF, funded by Fisa+, Fernsehfonds Austria, Vienna Film Fund and Lower Austria. Beta Film handles international sales.

The series, announced by distributor Beta Film on day two of Mipcom, will air 2026 on Austria’s ORF and Germany’s SAT.1, as well streamer Joyn.

The original series, Rex – A Cop’s Best Friend, starred Tobias Moretti and stretched to 123 episodes, with the series sold by Beta Film around the world. Since then, Rex has inspired a number of international adaptations – including Canadian series Hudson & Rex, Italy’s Il Commissario Rex and Poland’s Komisarz Alex – adding up to a total of 750 episodes.
