BBC seeking ‘creator economy native’ for new head of multiplatform commissioning

The BBC is seeking its first head of multiplatform commissioning as part of its strategy to create more content for YouTube as well as TikTok, Roblox and other platforms.

Dan McGolpin

The UK pubcaster has posted a job application for the role, which will report to Dan McGolpin, director of BBC iPlayer and TV channels.

The chosen candidate will work with the iPlayer and channels teams as well as with the factual, entertainment, drama and comedy commissioning teams in BBC Content, led by Kate Phillips.

They will also collaborate with other content teams such as Children’s, Sport, Radio 1, Sounds, Food and BBC News in addition to social media teams and commercial arm BBC Studios.

McGolpin said on LinkedIn that the BBC is seeking someone “native to the creator economy” who also “understands the BBC” for the position, which comes as it looks to reach audiences on YouTube and other third-party platforms.

Earlier this year, the BBC announced plans to launch upwards of 50 channels on YouTube, with specific commissions for the platform. Since then, commissioning briefs have been sent to producers for factual channels Perspective and Deepwatch.

“This acceleration of our strategy is from a position of strength because there is an opportunity to utilise third-party services by playing to native audiences and building an ecosystem,” said McGolpin.

“It doesn’t mean lift-and-shift TV distribution; it means putting more resource into learning how we can best serve our audience in places where they spend a lot of time. The strategy is already paying off in 2026 with BBC viewing hours on YouTube up more than 30% for 13-25s (16% for the wider audience).”

Earlier this year, the BBC promoted Lydia Mossahebi to the newly created role of head of YouTube content and programming strategy for its Children’s and Education division.
