Amazon turns pretty with Han, Wiip

Amazon Studios has greenlit an eight-part TV adaptation of Jenny Han’s best-selling young-adult book series The Summer I Turned Pretty, with former ABC chief Paul Lee’s studio Wiip coproducing.

The pilot has been written by Han, who will also be a showrunner with Gabrielle Stanton (Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty). Han, Stanton and Karen Rosenfelt will serve as executive producers, along with Lee, Nne Ebong and Hope Hartman from LA-based Wiip.

The series will launch exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 territories worldwide.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is described by Amazon as “a multigenerational drama that hinges on a love triangle between one girl and two brothers” and “a coming-of-age story about first love, first heartbreak and the magic of that one perfect summer.”

Han is author of the YA book series To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and an executive producer on all three Netflix films based on the books.

“In bringing this beloved novel to life as a television series, Jenny’s distinct voice will resonate with our global Prime Video audience, who are eager for more smart, funny and authentic young-adult content,” said Albert Cheng, chief operating officer and co-head of television at Amazon Studios.

Wiip was launched in 2016 by former ABC exec Lee and counts among its recent productions the Peabody winner Dickinson for Apple TV+, Mare of Easttown for HBO, The Uninhabitable Earth for HBO Max and Danny Boyle’s Pistol for FX.
